Damien Wilkins/Tattoos by Randy

Damien Wilkins received a new tattoo from Randy Harris of Tattoos by Randy today. He posted the following photo of the tattoo in progress:

And then this photo of the finished design:

Philadelphia 76ers, 2012-13

Tattoo percentage: 47% (7 players with tattoos, 8 without)

Despite still being below the league average, the tattoo percentage for the Sixers actually went up from last year.

Players with tattoos:

Kwame Brown
Brown has a tattoo on his left shoulder.

Royal Ivey
Harlem native Ivey has a massive tribute to New York City tattooed on his back.

Arnett Moultrie
Moultrie has tattoos on both arms.

Jason Richardson
A 2010 profile in the Phoenix New Times reported that Richardson has 26 tattoos, including his nickname (THA FACTOR), a grim reaper, the names of his family members, and a figure holding a basketball.

Damien Wilkins
Photographer Janet Klinger made some portraits of Wilkins and his wife that show off the tattoos on his chest and arm.

Dorell Wright
One of the most recognizable of Wright’s many tattoos is the text “G.H.O.S.T.” on his left shoulder. As Wright described to Inked Magazine, “I know that pops out because I see that one on the video games… It’s something me and one of my closest friends thought of, Go Hard Or Stop Trying.”

Nick Young
As described in a 2012 interview for Complex Sports, Young’s most recent tattoo is the text “In Swag We Trust” on his left forearm.

Players without tattoos:

Lavoy Allen
Andrew Bynum
Spencer Hawes

Jrue Holiday: notice that Holiday was listed as having a tattoo for the past two years, based on this photo. I now believe that was an error. Even though his face wasn’t visible, I trusted the caption on this webpage which poked fun at the design. I was further convinced by the fact that the design includes “21” which was Holiday’s jersey number at UCLA. However, revisiting the photo this year, I’m less convinced it’s an image of Holiday, as the number 8 seems visible on the subject’s left bicep, a tattoo I know Holiday doesn’t have. Besides, as an L.A. native, why would he wear a Nationals hat? Finally, a Philadelphia Daily News article about Holiday’s family from February 2013 mentions that tattoos are forbidden by his parents.

Charles Jenkins
Evan Turner
Thaddeus Young

Detroit Pistons, 2011-12

Tattoo percentage: 57% (8 players with tattoos, 6 without)

Last year I noted that it was the Pistons’ veterans-Hamilton, Wallace, and McGrady-who had the most tattoos while their younger players, Austin Daye and Greg Monroe, avoided them. This year they added a few young players, including Brandon Knight, who’s also tattoo-free, but Macklin and Russell are heavily covered. I’m psyched to see what this team looks like in a year or two.

Players with tattoos:

Will Bynum
While still in high school, Bynum had the NBA logo tattooed on his left arm. Confidence!

Ben Gordon
Gordon entered the league with a tattoo of an angel giving a basketball to a kneeling figure.

Vernon Macklin
Among Macklin’s “Forty or something” tattoos, the name “Rashawn Finney” tattooed on his left forearm is one of the most treasured, according to a Gatorsports.com article. Finney, one of Macklin’s best friends from childhood, was murdered at the age of 18. “I rub this every game before tipoff,” Macklin explained to Gatorsports, “every time before I go on the [free-throw] line.”

Jason Maxiell
Maxiell has a tattoo on his left shoulder.

Walker Russell Jr.
Russell has tattoos covering both arms.

Rodney Stuckey
Stuckey’s right shoulder features an elaborate design with what appears to be a skyline, a river, and a prince holding a basketball.

Ben Wallace
Wallace has a tattoo reading “No Pain No Game” on his left shoulder.

Damien Wilkins
Photographer Janet Klinger made some portraits of Wilkins and his wife that show off the tattoos on his chest and arm.

Players without tattoos:

Austin Daye
Jonas Jerebko
Brandon Knight
Greg Monroe
Tayshaun Prince
Charlie Villaneuva

Atlanta Hawks 2010-2011

Tattoo percentage: 64% (9 players with tattoos, 5 without)

I didn’t watch the Hawks enough this year to get a good sense of their character. That fight between Marvin Williams and Shawne Williams (of the Knicks) in January was the most memorable event, followed by the little rivalry between Amar’e Stoudemire and Al Horford that took place entirely in the press and was put to rest when the Knicks won their next two match-ups. I guess the lesson is you shouldn’t trust dudes with Marvin the Martian tattoos?

Players with tattoos:

Hilton Armstrong
The website UCONN Hoop Legends reports that Armstrong was so proud of his contributions to the 2004 Huskies NCAA championship that, “he had a tattoo of the ring put on his arm.” Sadly, they leave out the details of the design, in which the ring is raised by a kneeling figure who stands no taller than the ring itself.

Jamal Crawford

Players from Seattle tend to have a lot of tattoos (Nate Robinson, Jason Terry, Terrence Williams) and Crawford is one of the heaviest. On his left shoulder is one of the dreamiest basketball-themed tattoos in the league: against a background of heavenly clouds, a hoop glows, with “Jamal” lettered across the backboard in Olde English.

Kirk Hinrich
Has a chain tattooed on his left wrist in honor of his deceased grandfather.

Joe Johnson

Jackson has his mother’s name and an outline of the state of Arkansas (his birthplace) tattooed on his wrists.

Josh Powell

Has a tribute to his deceased son on his back.

Josh Smith

Smith turned 13 years old in 1998, so it’s no wonder that DMX’s Flesh of My Flesh Blood of My Blood had a massive impact on him, enough to inspire the tattoo on his collar.

Jeff Teague

Has tattoos on both arms.

Damien Wilkins

Lightly tattooed
on both shoulders.

Marvin Williams

Another heavily-tattooed player raised in Seattle, Wiliams got his first tattoo in high school: Marvin the Martian. Since that time has added many tattoos, including his mother’s name, the letters GBMS (“God Bless My Success”) and the words “Heart of a Lion” across his shoulders.

Players without tattoos:

Jason Collins

Al Horford

Zaza Pachulia

Pape Sy

Etan Thomas
